What is a Terrarium?
A terrarium is essentially a very small greenhouse, which is filled with small plants and rocks to create a miniature ecosystem. Usually made of glass, terrariums are available in many different shapes and sizes. They can be sealed or directly open to the air depending on what types of plants are proposed.
Sealed or closed terrariums are best for mosses, ferns and orchids because the conditions inside the vessel will mimic the high humidity growing conditions these plants like. A healthy, sealed terrarium will become its own micro-ecosystem, with very little outside input needed. Sealed terrariums should however be monitored to make sure moisture levels within the vessel are balanced, too much moisture might encourage mold or algae to flourish, too little and the plants may wilt.
Open terrariums are best suited for plants that prefer less moisture and/or that prefer more direct sunlight, such as cacti and succulents. They will need to be watered, although usually sparingly since there is no drainage and most open terrarium plants prefer low water conditions.
