Hot Tub & Spa Ideas For Your Yard

Just add water for instant relaxation. Let Gasper show you the best way to incorporate a hot tub or spa into your patio, deck, or pool.

In a Patio

A portable hot tub can be set on a concrete pad or directly on the patio itself. It is important to consider which direction the safety cover will open and to leave at least two feet for the opened cover.

Most self-contained or portable hot tubs are between 3′-0 and 3′-6” in height, which means climbing into them requires steps. Whenever possible, consider placing the hot tub 18” lower than the main patio level. This allows users to easily sit on the edge of the hot tub and swing their legs into it. When using this technique, ensure the mechanical access panel is still easily accessible by leaving full access to at least two sides of the hot tub for any necessary maintenance.

We use the hot tub almost every
night, especially my husband
because it is a great place to relax.
We feel so comfortable sitting
outside, having a glass of wine
or a martini to reflect on the
day.”

Into a Deck

The two hot tubs below are located on a lower paver patio but benefit from an extension of an adjacent deck. The raised access from the deck makes getting into the hot tub much easier and makes room for things like a bench to set down towels or to converse with guests while in the hot tub.

Under Cover

Placing a hot tub under a pergola will provide light shade or cover and create a sense of place, forming the feeling of an outdoor room.

Built-In Spa – Flush with Pool

Spas are often built as part of the pool. The following are examples of built-in spas that are flush with the pool and demonstrate a variety of different paving and coping materials, such as Pennsylvania bluestone, natural stone, bull-nosed concrete pavers, and travertine.

Built-In Spa -Raised

Below are two examples of spas that were built in conjunction with the pool but are raised. There are a few advantages of raising the height of the spa. One, because the spa is seat wall height, it can be used as both seating and make it easier to get into the spa. The second reason is that raised spas can also have a weir or spillway into the main pool that creates a waterfall-type water feature, similar to a fountain. They also can be made very attractive with a beautiful stone veneer. Raised spas are typically more expensive than those flush with the pool because you have the additional cost of the stonework.

Sometimes a spa can be completely separate from your pool. This is a good solution for homeowners who want to use the spa separately from the pool, perhaps in the winter months after most pools in our Philadelphia area have been shut down and winterized. Again, it is a more costly option as you will need two sets of equipment, one for the pool and another for the spa.

We had wanted a hot tub for a
long time. We are
quite happy with
how the space
has turned out.”
