Ask Eli:
What type of fabrics can be used for outdoor curtains?
Hear Eli Hymer’s answer in this short video about how to use outdoor drapery.
Any type of outdoor performance fabric (think Sunbrella) can be used to create exterior curtains or drapery. Unlike with upholstery or interior curtains, it is important to have a fabric that is visually appealing on its front AND back sides because exterior curtains and drapery are often seen from both sides.
I like to suggest the use of drapery on structures such as pavilions, porches and pergolas. Visually they add to the ambiance and help to create the feeling of an outdoor room, but they can be very practical as well, providing temporary shade and privacy. At the Gasper Exterior Furnishings Gallery, we currently offer outdoor curtains and drapery by Casual Cushion Corp. Their drapery panels are available in many different fabrics and in 84”, 96”, 108” or 120” lengths. They also come ready to hang with stylish 1¼“ black or bronze grommets. It is important to use proper hardware when installing outdoor drapery that is rated for exterior use, otherwise unwanted rust and staining can occur.
